If your kids are involved in sports, they probably spend a lot of time running between home, school and practice. That’s great for their health and fitness; however, it can also make them hungry! For this reason, it’s important that you keep healthy high protein snacks on hand.

Moms also know that if it is something the kids don’t like then it will just get thrown away and that’s no good.

So, here are 5 high protein snacks that your kids will actually love

1.  Trail mix or granola bars

If you are purchasing trail mix or bars, check the ingredient list and you’ll probably see that many brands are loaded with sugar.   However, if you dig a little you will find that there are some healthy options out there that taste delicious!

Use or look for mixes or bars with whole grains, nuts, fruits and seeds. The whole grains add fiber, which helps keep your child full longer—a major plus when there’s no time for lunch between soccer practice and gymnastics class!

Another delicious take on granola bars or trail mix that we love to make are energy bites.  Here is a great list of some and lots of them are higher in protein from things like nut butters, protein powder or even chickpeas!

Looking or some premade mixes or bars instead of homemade?  These, these and these are great options!

2.  Peanut Butter Sandwiches

Is there anything better than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for a snack?  Peanut butter keeps kids full and the healthy fats and protein are a great combination for active kids.  If you child will eat whole wheat bread even better, but you could also try a wrap or a rice cake.  Add a little honey for some sweetness or low sugar jelly or bananas.

If your child cannot eat peanut butter then Almond Butter is a great option or Sunflower butter is also a yummy option.  Trader Joe’s or Costco have some great options here.

3. Pita Bread with Hummus

Kids love pita bread, and hummus is an excellent alternative to mayo or butter with lots of flavor options. You can make your own hummus at home, or buy it from the store. You can also add some turkey slices to your pita and hummus for a little extra protein.

Hummus is also great with veggies, pretzels or whole wheat crackers.

4. Greek Yogurt with Berries

Greek yogurt is a great protein snack, and one the kids always love because you can make them taste like a smoothie or acai bowl.  You can use any kind of yogurt you like, but try not to buy flavored or artificially sweetened varieties as they contain lots of added sugar. Berries are also a good source of antioxidants, so this snack will help keep your immune system strong and prevent illness during cold and flu season. Add other toppings like honey, nuts or granola for extra flavor!

I sometimes add a scoop of protein powder and some almond milk to my yogurt for an extra protein boost.

5. Beef Jerky or Sticks

Beef Jerky and beef sticks are great high protein snack because not only are they delicious, but they are also super portable.  I like to find jerky that does not have a lot of sugar and added ingredients.  I actually think it tastes better, too.  For some good options you can give these or these a try!  This is also another area where Trader Joe’s and Costco have some good options.

If you are feeling adventurous, you can also make your own at home!
